Driftwood cannot run too many pieces on Bay Area (including East Bay and
South Bay and North Bay) folk and lore. Just last week the NY Times ran a piece
reviving a wee bit of lore about "Da People's (former) Mayor" Willie Brown, So I'll
be interested in hearing whether Chuck Prophet name-checked Downtown Willie
Brown in his song about the Say Hey Kid, "Willie Is Up At Bat"
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/15/us/willie-brown-remains-a-san-francisco-power-broker.html?pagewanted=all Prophet was the rare rocker that seemed to support
community radio, another strength of the Bay Area with terrific world and roots
music programming (loaded with lore) at www.kalw.org and www.kpfa.org

Good point above on reviewer Jeff's noting some of this hemisphere's many musicians influenced by Mali's regionally diverse music [Bambara or Kel Tamasheqt]. Cannot let pass without noting Dee Dee Bridgewater's 2007 Malian Odyssey "RED EARTH"
culminating in an amazing Bambara rap by Lassy King Massassy spiraling around
Bridgewater's own deft inflection in earthy English on Gene McDaniel's iconic 1960's

Thanks for another curious discovery worth checking out. Don't think I've heard of
Barchords on any of the community radio stations likely to play it, though he might've
cracked commercial radio with the slick if still intimate sound captured in this linked video clip. Is this guy and those studios in Canada, Finland, U.S.? Keep on doing

I happened on ‘Charity Ball’ in the 70′s but my regret is that I never saw Fanny live. I’ve played and replayed your CD box collection since I got it last year, a treasure trove of fresh music gives any band, now or then, a good run for its money. Thanks, June and Jean for the charming and interesting interview on NPR radio.

This is a good point, but Jeff did specify Malian artists - most of Paul Simon's African influence on Graceland came from South Africa. I can't speak for Jeff, but I'd also say that Simon assimilated world music into American popular music, rather than immersing himself in and composing in the traditional forms of other cultures.
